Where Baltimore County family cases are heard

Family law cases for Baltimore County are heard at the County Courts Building, 401 Bosley Avenue, Towson, MD 21204. Useful numbers:

A few local practices are worth knowing before your first court date. Scheduling and settlement conferences are commonly held remotely by video before a family law magistrate. Contested custody cases generally require both parents to complete a six hour online co-parenting class before mediation. The court also offers custody evaluations, supervised visitation and monitored exchanges through Family Support Services.

How Baltimore County manages family cases

The Circuit Court assigns family cases to differentiated case management tracks according to complexity. The track determines the deadlines and roughly when you will reach a trial date.

  • Expedited track. Uncontested divorces and simpler custody or support matters, generally reaching a merits hearing within a few months of filing and usually heard by a magistrate.
  • Standard track. Contested cases without significant financial complexity or high conflict custody issues, generally taking around nine months from filing, with hearings lasting one to two days.
  • Complex track. Cases involving extensive property, business valuation or high conflict child access evaluations. These take longest and represent a small share of the docket.

A scheduling conference is typically held after the first answer is filed in a contested case, where the court identifies the contested issues, assigns the track, and often refers the parties to mediation. Temporary relief hearings are scheduled according to track. The court’s stated goal is to conclude the large majority of family cases within a year of filing.
